Nikon Announces NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 Lens for Z-Mount Mirrorless Cameras

Nikon has announced the release of the NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 ultra-wide angle zoom lens for Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Like Nikon’s Nikkor Z 28-75mm F2.8 lens, which is basically Tamron’s 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens reworked and rebadged, this Nikkor Z 17-28mm F2.8 lens appears to be Nikon’s version of Tamron’s 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens.

The US price is $1,196.95 and it is now available for pre-order at Amazon, B&H, Adorama. Shipping will start on October 31, 2022.

The lens measures 75mm (3”) in diameter by 101mm (4”) in length and weighs approximately 450g (15.9oz). Nikon notes this is 30% lighter than the Nikkor Z 14-24mm F2.8 and a fraction less heavy than the 14-30mm F4 lens.

The lens is constructed of 13 elements in 11 groups, including three aspherical elements, two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements and one Super ED element. The autofocus group is driven via a stepping motor (STM) that has a minimum focusing distance of 19cm (7.6”). Other features include a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, a 67mm front filter thread and an aperture range of F2.8 through F22.

Its focal length offers users a diversified and convenient shooting experience, from capturing vivid night scenes, to everyday snaps – all without having to switch between multiple lenses. Housed in a compact body, the lens is easy to bring around for travels, equipping users with the ability to capture beautiful cityscapes and landscapes on the go.

Equipped with a control ring that offers a smooth feel when using it and without any intrusive sounds, the NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 further allows users to record movies comfortably with a natural shift in focus position and brightness level. The lens is also designed to effectively suppress effects of focus breathing to help achieve smoother transitions in videos. Its compact size and weight pairs well with a gimbal, even while maintaining optimal performance needed for 4K video recording.
